Talk • Food as Resistance: How Gastronomic Culture Helps Ukraine Win the War

Join us for a presentation by Dr. Ihor Lylo, a Ukrainian culinary historian, and a stimulating conversation about the protective role of Ukrainian food culture at the time of war. Learn how the gastronomic culture helps a country that is often called the “breadbasket of Europe” survive Russia’s war over values, principles, and resources in the context of a larger geopolitical struggle.
Dr. Ihor Lylo is a Ukrainian culinary historian. He is an associated professor at Lviv National University of Ivan Franko in Ukraine and currently resides at the University of San Diego as a fellow in the Scholars at Risk program. His expertise lies in the culture of food and local cuisine. Dr. Lylo’s most recent publication includes Ukraine. Food and History featuring traditional Ukrainian recipes and exciting stories about the history of Ukrainian cuisine.
