MA Program Requirements
The REEES Concentration in Global Studies integrates language training and area studies courses along with the development of technical and academic expertise.
Students choose a regional focus, related languages, and relevant area studies courses.
Most students complete the program in two years, but by taking extra course work during the semester and/or summer, students have the possibility to complete the MA in 18 months. This fast-track option is designed for Foreign Area Officer (FAO) personnel.
CORE REQUIREMENTS
- 36 credit hours: 9 credits per semester is considered full time enrollment
- Three required courses: GLBL 700, GLBL 730, HIST 783
- Language course enrollment required each semester
- MA Thesis (at least 3 credits of GLBL 993 in semester of thesis defense, no more than 6 credits can be counted towards graduation)
YEAR ONE
Fall
- GLBL 700 Introduction to Research and Theory in Global Studies, 3 credits
- HIST 783 Contemporary History of Russia and Eastern Europe, 3 credits
- Language Course, 3 credits
Spring
- GLBL 730 Identities and Transitions, 3 credits
- Language course, 3 credits
- Elective, 3 credits
* Students are strongly encouraged to complete intensive summer language courses at partner schools abroad and in the U.S. after their first year in the program.
YEAR TWO

COURSES
Students are allowed to take courses from any discipline offered at UNC-CH or Duke University (see UNC-Duke Interinstitutional Agreement for specific information and requirements). Complete the Interinstitutional Approval Form in order to register at Duke.
