Carolina Seminar • No Natural Colonization: The Early Soviet School of Historical Anticolonialism

January 19, 2023 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Alexey Golubev is an associate professor of Russian history and digital humanities at the University of Houston. His research interests lie in understanding the historical experience of 20th-century Russia and other socialist and post-socialist societies in the context of global modernity. He is the author of The Things of Life: Materiality in Late Soviet Russia (Cornell University Press, 2020), about the impact of materiality on the organization of the Soviet social life during the late socialist era. He is also a coauthor of The Search for a Socialist El Dorado: Finnish Immigration to Soviet Karelia from the United States and Canada in the 1930s (Michigan State University Press, 2014).

The seminar series is co-sponsored by the Carolina Seminar Program, the UNC Department of History, and the UNC Center for Slavic, Eurasian and East European Studies. Please note that the participants will give an overview of their projects, but will not read a formal paper. Instead, papers or book chapters will be circulated ahead of time to those who are interested in attending and participating in the discussion. Please contact Dr. Eren Tasar for more information (etasar@email.unc.edu).
