The Center for Slavic, East European and Eurasian Studies

Newly transformed, yet often misunderstood, Russia, Eastern Europe and Eurasia are the sites of some of the most significant cultural, political and scientific developments in modern history. The Center for Slavic, Eurasian and East European Studies (CSEEES) at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill fosters a comprehensive knowledge of the histories, cultures, languages and institutions of this important and rapidly changing region.

Our faculty are distinguished in their research, teaching, service, and professional activities. Students have the opportunity to engage with more than 30 core and affiliate faculty on campus; additionally they can take advantage of faculty and course offerings at our partner school: Duke University. The Curriculum benefits from the Slavic, Eurasian and East European Collections housed at University Library. The Slavic and East European holdings at UNC-CH are approximately 800,000 volumes and additional volumes are available at Duke.

In cooperation with the Duke-UNC Center for Slavic, Eurasian, and East European Studies, UNC CSEEES fosters a deeper understanding of Eastern European and Eurasian countries, thereby improving our national capacity to meet strategic U.S. needs. CSEEES seeks to accomplish this purpose through a wide variety of projects and activities, including:

– teacher training and public outreach activities,

– development of innovative courses and curricula in language, culture and area studies, including clearly articulated proficiency standards and goals for language acquisition,

– conferences and workshops,

– faculty and student exchanges, and application of new technologies to language, culture and social science courses.

The principal audience for these projects and activities is undergraduate and graduate students, K-12 teachers, instructors at post-secondary institutions, the business community, community organizations, the military, and the media.
