Lunch&Learn • Lost and Found in Prague, 1847

This presentation focuses on Prague’s first Czech-language guidebook and its author, Karel Vladislav Zap, to explore various forms of belonging in early nineteenth-century Prague. It asks how writing helped Zap to establish a place among the city’s emerging Czech-speaking elites. It also asks how this Prague native relied upon local history and the practice of strolling to establish for his readers a sense of belonging within a German-dominated, modernizing city.

Chad Bryant is an associate professor in the UNC History Department. He is the author of Prague in Black: Nazi Rule and Czech Nationalism and co-editor of Borderlands in World History and Walking Histories, 1800-1914, respectively. His is currently writing a history of modern Prague that is also an extended essay on the meanings and forms of belonging in the modern era.
