Lunch and Learn with Louise McReynolds, “Six Archeologists in Search of an Auteur” (With Apologies to Pirandello)”

January 19, 2016 @ 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm

Louise McReynolds, Cary C. Boshamer Distinguished Professor of History, will present on “Six Archeologists in Search of an Auteur (With Apologies to Pirandello).”

‣ Talk summary

Like the wandering characters in the Pindar play who approached the beleaguered director, Tsarist Russia’s archaeologists have come to me and demanded that I produce a coherent structure for their lives. But they refuse to stop their bickering and can’t agree on the simplest interpretation of anything from ancient Ol’via to mammoth bones. And the politics is no less divisive! I hope to write a happier ending to their saga than Pindar did for his characters, but they are trying my patience.

‣ Bio

Louise McReynolds received her education at Southern Methodist University, Indiana University, and the University of Chicago. She served a stint in the Peace Corps and spent two decades at the University of Hawai’i before moving to UNC in 2006. Her research has been funded by a variety of institutions, from the old IREX to the Guggenheim Foundation. Her new project on archaeology requires that she retool herself into a Digital Historian and an archaeologist.

Lunch boxes will be provided to registrants. Please RSVP with your lunch order by noon on Friday, January 15.
