Join the Central Asia Working Group as Jeff Eden discusses his latest book, God Save the USSR (Oxford University Press, 2021), examines the explosion in Muslim and Christian devotional life that occurred in the Soviet Union during World War II. Using untapped and largely unknown sources in Russian, Persian and multiple Turkic languages, the book argues that the war opened the floodgates for a resurgence in spiritual life in the communist, atheist USSR.
Jeff Eden is Assistant Professor of History at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. His previous books include Slavery and Empire in Central Asia (2020) and Warrior Saints of the Silk Road (2018).
