Visegrad Studies • Democratic Revolution or Backsliding? Poland after the Elections

April 23 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

In October 2023, Poles decided that the populist right had lost power in Poland. Liberals, centrists, and social democrats won more parliamentary seats than Law and Justice (PiS). The first test for the new ruling coalition was the local elections held on April 7, 2024. However, the winner of these elections nationally turned out to be the PiS party, which maintained power in many regions.

Dr. Bartosz Rydlinski, a political scientist from the Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski University in Warsaw, will discuss the recent parliamentary and local elections in Poland, pointing out the sources of failure and success of both right-wing populism and liberal and center-left groupings. Particular attention will be paid to the debate around the tripartite division of power in Poland and the socio-economic reforms of the former governments of Beata Szydło and Mateusz Morawiecki and the current majority led by Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
