20 Days in Mariupol is a poignant Ukrainian documentary directed by Mstyslav Chernov, chronicling the harrowing first twenty days in the besieged city of Mariupol following the onset of Russia’s intensified military aggression towards Ukraine. The film, a collaboration between Frontline and the Associated Press (AP), showcases the compelling footage captured by Chernov and his team, presenting an unflinching look at the human cost of the conflict.

This special screening will be followed by a Q&A session with the field producer, Vasilisa Stepanenko, offering attendees a unique opportunity to gain insight into the making of the documentary and the realities faced on the ground during the siege of Mariupol.

20 Days in Mariupol has received international acclaim, being shortlisted for the Oscars 2024 in two categories, and has been a powerful voice in highlighting the resilience and suffering of the Ukrainian people. The film has also been nominated for BAFTA in two categories and for the Directors Guild of America Awards, receiving more than 20 awards and 40 nominations in total.

The UNC Center for Slavic, Eurasian, and Eastern European Studies and UNC Global Affairs invite the community to join this significant event, which not only pays tribute to the victims and survivors of the conflict but also fosters a deeper understanding of the ongoing challenges facing Ukraine. This screening is a testament to the power of documentary filmmaking in bearing witness to historical events and shaping public discourse.
