Wargaming Event: Arctic Awakenings

UNC Women in National Security (WINS), UNC Global Affairs, UNC’s Center for Slavic, Eurasian, and East European Studies, and the Triangle Institute for Security Studies (TISS) are excited to be co-hosting a wargaming simulation put on by Valens Games (see here for more info: https://valensgames.com)! They have run simulations at Duke, Georgetown, Carnegie Mellon, and this will be their third year hosting a game at UNC. We are excited to offer this amazing experience again this year and hope you all can join us.

You will step into the world of Arctic Awakenings, where military advancements and emerging technologies have turned the Arctic into the world’s newest battleground. Set in 2030, this game demands your decisive actions to shape the course of history. Can you lead your team—whether it’s China, Russia, North Korea, the U.S., or Canada—as an arms race, climate change, K-Pop groups, pro-diplomacy movements, and TikTok stars reshape the world order? Players navigate this maze as they try to advance their teams’ objectives. Will you outmaneuver your rivals, or will your choices plunge the world into turmoil? In Arctic Awakenings, the destiny of nations lies in your hands.

The game will take place on January 25th from 10:00am to to 3pm in UNC’s FedEx Global Education Center. Please make sure to arrive 30 minutes early in order to complete the check-in process. After positive feedback from last year’s game, we are continuing the post-game social/networking reception. Attendance for this is optional, but, highly encouraged for all participants. The reception will follow the closing remarks of the game and will be in the atrium of the FedEx building.

This experience will be an incredible opportunity to foster interdisciplinary cooperation, explore real-world dilemmas, and practice quick and strategic decision-making. Most importantly, it will be fun! Please register here.
