Calling The Diamond Arm (dir. Leonid Gaidai; USSR 1969) a “cult movie” doesn’t begin to define its status in the Russophone mind and heart. It is more than a movie, more than a comedy — it is a goldmine of idioms, an all-encompassing worldview, a civilizational centerpiece. “The king of Soviet comedy” Gaidai engages a dazzling constellation of Soviet A-listers to craft a cinematic phenomenon that achieves the impossible: it comes astonishingly close to redeeming the USSR as a make-belief universe of humor and kindness where the Soviet everyman lives in utopian harmony with the fatherly state.
