Film Screening • Kolja (Czech Republic, 1996)

November 16, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm

As the Cold War winds down, former concert cellist Louka (Zdenek Sverák) barely makes ends meet providing accompaniment at funerals after being blacklisted from his much cushier job with the Prague Philharmonic. For a fee, he marries a Russian woman so she can become a Czech citizen, but she immediately emigrates to West Germany, leaving the bachelor with her sickly 5-year-old Kolya and a host of official questions about the sham marriage.

In Czech with English subtitles • DVD • 105″

The screening will be followed by a discussion with Chad Bryant (History, UNC) and Jessie Barton Hronešová (Marie Skłodowska-Curie Global Fellow).

Free and open to the public. Presented by the UNC Center for Slavic, Eurasian and East European Studies, Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages and Literatures, and the UNC Center for European Studies.
