Faculty Panel • ChatGPT in Context

What is ChatGPT? Where did it come from? What does it mean for science, scholarship, and public life? Join our interdisciplinary panel for a discussion of this new technology and its real and imagined impacts on the campus community. The following panelist will be leading the discussion:

Alice Marwick, an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication and Principal Researcher at the Center for Information, Technology and Public Life, which she co-founded, at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She researches the social, political, and cultural implications of popular social media technologies.

Shashank Srivastava, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Shashank’s research interests lie in automatically analyzing and helping computers understand the structure and meaning of human language. He received the Yahoo InMind Fellowship for 2016-17. His research has been covered by popular media outlets including GeekWire and New Scientist.

Heesoo Jang, a Royster fellow and a Richard Cole fellow at the Hussman School of Journalism and Media, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She works as a policy collaboration graduate assistant with the Center for Information, Technology, and Public Life (CITAP). Her research is at the intersection of journalism, media, and technology. She studies the multifaceted impacts of emerging technologies and media, including AI systems and digital platforms, on people, journalism, and society.

Chad Bryant, a Professor in the Department of History at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Chad Bryant’s interests include nationalism and the urban experience in modern Central and Eastern Europe, with a particular focus on the lands of today’s Czech Republic. His most recent book focuses on the capital city of Prague and questions of belonging in the modern era. He is, with Kateřina Čapková and Diana Dumitru, completing a study of the Stalinist-era show trials in Czechoslovakia.
