Assessing Angela Merkel and Vladimir Putin’s Negotiation Styles • Erinn Whitaker (CSEEES Fellow)

CSEEES fellow Erinn Whitaker will give an overview of her new methodology for assessing negotiating style at a distance. Ms. Whitaker developed this methodology based on the Dual Concerns Model, which plots concern for self against concern for others to determine an individual’s preferred negotiating style. She will discuss how she created the methodology and how she is using it to assess relations between Russian President Vladimir Putin and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Erinn Whitaker is a political analyst with the United States government and is serving as a government-commissioned research fellow at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill during 2015-2017. She has a decade of experience covering Russian and German politics from Washington, DC and Berlin, Germany and is focusing her research on applying theories from behavioral negotiation literature to the Merkel-Putin relationship. She holds a MA in Russian and East European Studies from Georgetown University.
