Andrei Kureichik • Art and Resistance: Belarusian Protest Art in the Context of Authoritarianism

Andrei Kureichik is a writer and theater and cinema director from Belarus who is currently in exile. Andrey Kureichik is renowned for his artistic solidarity initiatives that have traversed over forty nations. Andrei received the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Expression from the European Parliament in 2020 in recognition of his advocacy for human rights while serving on the Coordination Council of Belarus. This art documentary addresses the challenges of Belarusians’ resistance to the autocratic regime of Alexander Lukashenko and the dire situation of political detainees in post-Soviet Belarus occupies the focal point of the documentary. Video art, depicting the valiant resistance of Belarusians against the dictatorship through documentary and artistic videos and animations, occupies the primary focus of the exhibition. The video artwork is complemented by “Voices of New Belarus,” a documentary play by Andrei Kureichik that compiles sixteen monologues of Belarusians and actual political detainees who were caught in the path of Lukashenko’s repressive machine. He will also host a Lunch and Learn book presentation on November 8, focusing on his new work about Belarusian political prisoners and the power of art in resisting repression.
