Q: Where did you study as an undergraduate? What was your major(s)?
I received my B.A. in International Relations with a minor in Criminal Justice from High Point University.
Q: What do you like about UNC’s graduate program in Russian and East European Studies?
I enjoy the opportunity that I have to take both Turkish language and Russian, Eastern European, and Eurasian area studies courses concurrently. I find the study of cultural and linguistic nuances extremely important when also studying the history and politics of the region.
Q: Why did you choose to specialize in this region of the globe?
During my sophomore year of university, I took a Middle Eastern History class that explored the Ottoman Empire and early Turkish history. That class deepened my interest in Turkey, so I began an independent study of the Turkish language. When I was awarded a Boren Scholarship, I was finally able to study abroad in Baku, Azerbaijan. I absolutely loved my time in Baku, and it furthered my desire to study the Eurasian region at the graduate level.
Q: Do you have work and/or study experience in the region?
In Fall of 2023, I studied Turkish at the Azerbaijani University of Languages in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Q: What are your research interests?
I desire to research Turkish public opinion on the US, NATO, and Russia, specifically focusing on pre- and post-coup sentiments. Additionally, I am interested in researching the diplomatic and military relationship between Turkey and the US.
Q: What would you like to do after you graduate?
I plan to pursue a career in national security.
Q: What are your hobbies? What do you like doing in your free time?
In my free time, I enjoy traveling, hiking, and playing soccer. Additionally, I enjoy watching and attending Carolina Hurricanes hockey games.
Q. What is your favorite visual reminder of the region and why?
The attached photo is one I took of the beautiful Baku skyline with the famous flame towers in the background. I love the picture because it displays both the modern and historic parts of the city.
