The UNC Center for Slavic, Eurasian, and East European Studies (CSEEES) invites applications from PhD and MA students enrolled in UNC-CH social science programs for the 2020 Summer Research and Language Study Awards. The awards support: 1) fieldwork in Russia toward the completion of the PhD dissertation or MA thesis; 2) interdisciplinary dissertation and thesis research that includes Russia as a significant case study; and 3) the study of Russian at advanced levels. Preference will be given to applicants pursuing graduate degrees in anthropology, communication, economics, environmental studies, geography, global studies, media studies, political science, public policy, sociology, and urban planning.
The Summer Research and Language Study Awards must be used between May and September 2020. The award will provide up to $8,000 in funding to be used toward travel, accommodation, research materials, visa fees, language certification, and living expenses.
To apply, please submit a proposal (not to exceed 1,000 words), curriculum vitae, a preliminary budget, and two letters of recommendation from faculty members that can evaluate the proposed research project and/or the benefit of developing an advanced-level language proficiency. Research project proposals should outline the research question(s), methodology, and contribution to Russian studies. Language study proposals need to include a description of concrete professional development and long-term career goals that necessitate advanced proficiency in Russian.
