    Program Requirements

    The MA RUES program integrates language training and area studies courses along with the development of technical and academic expertise.

    Students will choose a regional focus and related language, relevant area studies courses, and an academic or professional concentration.

    Most students complete the program in 2 years, but by taking extra course work during the semester and/or summer, students have the possibilty to complete the MA in 18 months. This fast-track option is designed for Foreign Area Officer (FAO) personnel.

    Core Requirements

    1. 30 credit hours- 9 credits per semester is considered full time enrollment
    2. Three required courses (in bold below): RUES 710, RUES 730, HIST 783
    3. Language course enrollment required each semester
    4. MA Thesis (at least 3 credits of RUES 993 in semester of thesis defense, no more than 6 credits  can be counted towards graduation)

    YEAR ONE

    FALL

    • RUES 710- Core Colloquium, 1 credit
    • HIST 783- Contemporary History of Russia and Eastern Europe, 3 credits
    • Language Course- 3 credits
    • Elective- 3 credits

    SPRING

    • RUES 730- Identities and Transitions, 3 credits
    • Language Course- 3 credits
    • Elective- 3 credits

    SUMMER

           Language Study or Internship

     YEAR TWO

    FALL

    • Language Course- 3 credits
    • Elective- 3 credits
    • Either: Second elective- 3 credits  OR  RUES 993- Thesis Project, 3 credits

    SPRING

    • RUES 993- Thesis Project, 3 or 6 credits
    • Language Course- 3 credits
    • Elective- 3 credits (optional depending on Thesis credits)
