- Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships (FLAS) are funded with grants from the U.S. Department of Education
- FLAS Fellowships fund the study of languages, particularly Less Commonly Taught Languages (LCTLs), and area studies coursework
- Academic Year and Summer Fellowships assist graduate students and, where applicable, advanced undergraduate students in foreign language and area studies
- The goals of the fellowship program are
(1) to assist in the development of knowledge, resources, and trained personnel for modern foreign language and area/international studies;
(2) to stimulate the attainment of foreign language expertise of students who intend to make their careers in college or university teaching, government service, or other employment where the knowledge of foreign languages and cultures is essential; and
(3) to develop a pool of international experts to meet national needs.
In which languages does CSEEES offer a FLAS?
UNC CSEEES FLAS Fellowships are designed to provide support and funding to students studying the languages and cultures of Eurasia and Eastern Europe. Eligible languages include:
- Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian
- Czech
- Hungarian
- Turkish
- Polish
- Russian
- Other (in consultation with the UNC CSEEES FLAS Coordinator)
Who should apply for a FLAS Fellowship?
- Graduate students may apply for Academic Year and/or Summer awards (if applying for Russian, you must be at an intermediate or advanced level of language proficiency).

Undergraduate students may apply for Summer ONLY and must be at the intermediate or advanced level of proficiency for any of the eligible languages.
- CSEEES aims to distribute fellowships among a diverse range of disciplines.
- Professional studies students in the following fields are encouraged to apply: Business; Law; Public Health; Public Policy/City and Regional Planning; Environmental Science; Journalism and Mass Communications; and Education.
Academic Year
- Tuition and required fees at UNC-CH
- $15,000 stipend paid in 2 installments
Summer
- Tuition and required fees at a pre-approved language program (up to $5,000)
- $2,500 stipend
What are the eligibility requirements in order to receive a UNC CSEEES FLAS?
- Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- Student in good standing
How do I apply for a FLAS grant?
Collect and/or complete the following documents:
- UNC CSEEES application form
- Applicants may use the same application form for Summer and Academic Year Fellowships
- If you are applying for a Summer award, propose an eligible language program on your application. Review this website before contacting CSEEES FLAS Coordinator about summer programs
- FLAS Essay (requirements noted on application) Make sure to note your name and page number on each page.
- NOT required for beginning language study
- To be completed by your language instructor
- Academic transcripts
- Current UNC-CH students can submit unofficial transcripts
- Prospective students can use transcripts from their program applications (you must email program to get transcripts sent to CSEEES)
- Two letters of recommendation (no specific form)
- CV or resume
- 2 page limit, 12 pt font, note your name on each page

- Despite the submission method used, ALL application materials are due by Monday, January 30, 2012 @ 11:59pm. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

What are the FLAS Fellow responsibilities?
- Academic Year Fellows should be enrolled in a formal academic program of full-time study during the academic year, including the target language and an area studies course each semester.
- Courses must be approved by the CSEEES FLAS Coordinator.
- All study plans are subject to approval by the US Department of Education.
- Complete all payroll paperwork in a timely manner
- Complete all required FLAS reporting, language assessments, and data gathering as directed in a timely manner.
