“Reforming Islam: Change and Continuity in Central Asia”
Summary: This talk will introduce theories of Islamic reform and reform movements and offer a case study the Jadid movement of Central Asia at the turn of the 20th century. Candace will discuss the reform efforts and important figures in Uzbekistan that shed light on motives of reformers as well as Muslim culture and society in Central Asia.

Bio: Candace Mixon is a PhD Student in the Department of Religious Studies at UNC. She earned her M.A. in Islamic Studies from McGill University and her B.A. in Religious Studies from Vanderbilt University.
