Part of the War, Love, and Madness series.
"Kolya" is the story of a middle-aged Czech cellist who unexpectedly inherits a 6-year-old Russian boy. "Kolya" takes place in Prague in 1988, shortly before the Velvet Revolution that marked the end of Soviet domination in Czechoslovakia. The film has a light, dreamlike quality -- as if the characters have been kissed by unseen fate and brought together to enrich each other and feel more sharply the pulse of life. It is extraordinarily beautiful, with gorgeous cinematography by Vladimir Smutny, who builds his palette from gold, ocher, sienna and umber. - New York Times review
